Fossils in kentucky

Our latest fossil hunting trip proved to be very successfull we found lots of fossilized coral  and brachipods parts of kentucky used to be covered by water many many years ago now the coral fish and plant life are fossilized in the shale and rocks of kentucky
here are a few pictures of the first piece of fossilized coral we found

The first of many to be posted

What is a fossil?Fossils are plant or animal life that has imprinted into the earths crust for a certain  period of time.he Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Mississippian, and some of the Pennsylvanian rocks of Kentucky began as sediments laid down in shallow tropical sea.So not uncommonly most out fossils are coral plant life fish, brachipods, shellfish and even fossilized squids have been found.

Finding fossils:
Fossils are found in sedimentary rocks.sedimentary rocks  result from loose sediment that has formed in layers almost all of kentuckys rocks are at the surface but underneath sedimentary rocks exsist witch make kentucky excellent for fossils bearing.
Common sedimentary rocks in kentucky are shale, limestone and sandstone.
Fossils in kentucky range from 480 to 505 million years ago they are ancient and much older than the dinosaur putting them in the ordovician period .
(Silurian Period), 408 to 360 million years old (Devonian Period), 360 to 320 million years ago (Mississippian Period), 320 to 285 million years old (Pennsylvanian Period), 144 to 65 million years old (Cretaceous Period), 65 to 1.6 million years old (Tertiary Period), and less than 1.6 million years old (Quaternary Period). A geologic map of Kentucky shows the distribution of these different age rocks. Not all ages are found in Kentucky.
